What are the key elements of a brand identity?

Are you feeling a bit lost and overwhelmed with your brand identity? No need to worry, we’re here to make it easy for you. The most important element of brand identity is having a solid brand strategy. This is crucial when it comes to creating a unique and authentic brand identity that stands out from the rest. Think of your brand strategy as the blueprint and guiding star for your brand that helps you stay true to your business.

To craft a brand strategy, we need to clarify a few things. In this blog post, we’ll focus on the three most important ones: your personal story, your why, and your dream client.

  1. During our strategy calls, we love to do an exercise with our clients where they can braindump their entire personal story. This includes how they got to where they are today, who they are as people, their beliefs, core values, and what is most important to them in life. This could include their family, friends, or even their pets. This exercise helps us gain a clearer understanding of who they truly are. After all, there is only one of you, and your experiences, upbringing, and unique quirks all contribute to that. These are the special touches that we use to create something truly authentic and unique for our clients.
  2. Your “why” is the reason you started your business. Really delving into this can help you gain clarity. It’s important to revisit your “why” from time to time to ensure that your decisions are aligned with it. Your “why” could mean more freedom, financial independence, more time with your kids, and so on.
  3. Your dream client is important because you are not only designing a brand identity based on your preferences but also on what would resonate with your ideal customer. For example, if you are a health coach and your dream client is a 30-year-old single woman who wants to get into shape, you need to understand her likes, hobbies, and interests. When you know this, you can design your brand around her preferences by choosing colors and messaging that she would love and use.

Once you have these elements down, you can create a core idea statement that feels true to you and your brand. From there, you can start designing your brand identity, which includes things like a mood board, color palette, typography suite, logos, brand elements/illustrations, and marketing materials, messaging, tone of voice, photography, and brand images.

It’s important to consistently connect these elements to your brand strategy so that your brand identity feels authentic and aligned. By doing so, you can always verify that what you are designing is in line with the brand strategy you have created for yourself. Does the branding feel aligned? Will my messaging and language resonate with my ideal client? By keeping these key elements in mind and backing them up with your brand strategy, I’m confident that your brand identity will be powerful, unique, and truly reflective of your business.
